Ethics

Reflect on this week's materials on ethics. What are your opinions on the Utilitarianism, Libertarian and Aristotle approaches?

19 comments:

  1. I learnt that utilitarianism is less pain and more pleasure. It is also about producing the greatest happiness and least pain for the greatest number of people.

Libertarian is that everyone has their own essential rights that cannot be violated. If we respect the each other's liberty, utility is maximised because happiness is increased. However, there are still some liberty that decreases utility.

Aristotle is doing what is right means giving people what they deserve. But we must first determine what are the virtues worthy of honour & reward.

In my opinion, I don't even know that there is such words as Utilitarianism, Libertarian and Aristotle. I also didn't know that Utilitarianism, Libertarian and Aristotle approaches are part of ethics. I thought ethics was just some cultures.

After the lesson, I learnt that there are no right or wrong decisions depending on situations such as being a doctor. For example, in case of emergency, a doctor have to make a decision on who to save first even though there is only one survival.

  2. In the lecture about ethics I have learned about Utilitarianism being about the maximum pleasure for the maximum amount of people for the least gain. This teaches me about Bentham's way of viewing things, I also think that his four hallmarks of utilitarianism does indeed match a lot of the way most humans behave.

For Libertarians the view of Taxation is forced labor I kind of agree in that view because work is done by you and you should not be taxed for your hard work it is done by oneself and therefore any tax on you is forced labor like in the Michael Jordan's scenario it clearly shows that. So I agree with the Libertarian way of seeing things

For the Aristotle's view, Doing what is right means giving people what they deserve, this is also a okay fact to me seeing the purple heart medal that was talked about in class for injured war soldiers or soldiers who have witness friend's death this proves the Aristotle view because the soldier's have suffered for the country and their virtues are correct so therefore should be rewarded.

So in conclusion this lesson has thought me many interesting things about ethics and i may be applying this newly learned ethics to my life as I found this topic to be an interesting read.

  3. Firstly, the Utilitarianism approach (the Result or the Consequence of an Act is the real measure of whether it is good or bad). Jeremy Bentham theory says that we ought to do that which produces the greatest happiness and least pain for the greatest number of people. I do not agree with this approach. No one has the right to end a person's life, no matter the circumstances.
Secondly, the Libertarians approach (the Right to life, liberty & freedom is most important) Robert Nozick theory believes that everyone should have their own rights in everything they do and that no one should have the right to take away that right. For this approach, it emphasizes on people who only care about themselves or should be defined as selfishness.

Lastly, the Aristotle’s approach (Look at virtues from the point of view of virtues is called Teleological). Aristotle theory believes that it is hard to conclude what virtue is & what virtue is not. His theory says that doing what is right means giving people what they deserve. For this approach, it is about promoting virtues. It means doing what is right, giving people what they deserve. To establish a just constitution we must first establish the most desirable way of life.

I thick Aristotle approaches is the best because it is important to do the right thing and virtues should be looked at instead of own personal gains or for the greater good.

  4. Utilitarianism: Pain and Pleasure. Anything that increases our pleasureness and decreases pain.

Libertarian: Individual's own freedom and respect others liberty.

Aristotle: Doing what's more deserving according to worthy virtues.

In my opinion, each ethics is important in terms of making decisions. Utilitarianism does give a sense of understanding but it doesn't always seem right for others. Same goes to Libertarian and Aristotle because different people makes different decision for different situations as different people may not think alike. Even if there is an ideal person who can look through these 3 main ethics points, there can never have a right or wrong decision because some decisions are not meant to be strictly followed, instead some other terms more than just virtues can be added like mutual trust. In conclusion, great minds don't think alike in ethics terms.

  5. In this lecture, I learn 3 new things: Utilitarianism, Libertarian and Aristotle.

In Utilitarianism, I've learn about Bentham's Formulation of Utilitarian as well as the 4 Hallmarks of Utilitarianism. For Bentham's Formulation of Utilitarian, it's said that actions whose results increase happiness and diminish pain are good. Next, the 4 Hallmarks of Utilitarianism: Consequentialism, Hedonism, Maximalism and Universalism. Also, Utilitarianism is simply put as "We ought to do that which produces the great happiness and least pain for the greatest number of people.

For Libertarians, I've learn that so long as an individual have the right to be free and choose to live the way they want, they will respect the liberty of others.

For Aristotle, I've learn that doing what is right means giving people what they deserve but we must first determine what are the virtues worthy of the honour and reward.

  6. I learnt that Utilitarianism approach has the formula of the submission of happiness minus the submission of unhappiness . So a Utilitarian law is that as long as the amount of happiness is more than the amount of unhappiness then it is okay , but i disagree because people still suffer from the unhappiness and from my point of view , it is cruel to see people suffer or ignore their suffering .

Next , i would like to talk about the Libertarians approach to which , one do what they want , regardless any conditions which stops them . I feel that this refers to people who do not care about law and order and will do whatever they want just to make themselves happy . To Libertarians , freedom is the most important factor in their life . All they want is freedom to do anything they want .

Lastly , i will talk about Aristotle 's approach . Basically Aristotle 's main quote is '' doing what is right means giving people what they deserve. '' For example , a student scored straight A(s) for his exams , so he deserve a reward .

I feel that the Aristotle approach is the best approach among the three because it looks for the good points of a person and judge him by his virtue and whether he is worth what he was given better than formula of the approach just to get your personal gains .

  7. During the lesson on ethics, we’ve learnt about the Utilitarianism, Libertarians and Aristotle. I have never encountered these 3 significant words in my life until I have learnt from CIS.

It is a good learning experience for me as I get understand those words by going through the hallmarks in the lesson.

For the Utilitarianism, by simplifying it, it means produce the greatest happiness and least pain for the greatest number of people. It was illustrated by an example show in the lecture slides regarding trolley experiment.

Next, through ethics lesson I get to know Libertarians. Its approach: there are some rights intrinsic to an individual that must be respected even if doing so decrease utility. To make it simple, it means we own ourselves=Self Possession.

Lastly, to carry out Aristotle, we need to determine the virtues respectively. However, it is hard to conclude what virtue is and what virtue is not. Hence, to establish a just constitution we must first establish the most desirable way of life.

Overall, through this lesson, I’ve learnt that how Ethics uses in life from different kinds of people around the world and how can it be used in actual life.

  8. Utilitarianism is like communism everybody must have highest amount of happiness and lowest amount of pain.

Libertarian is like selfish people who maximize their own gain at the expense of sharing with others.

Aristotle is about a person's habit brought up in the person's experience in life, then he/she will use this experience to judge things that he/she thinks is worthy or not.

  9. Through these three different terms of ethic and some examples on slides about decision making at the last moment involving human lives and how a person would suddenly do stupid things. I realise that a person point of view can be changed depending on circumstances about one's value or/and gain in the process and i guess this is life for we are living in money mad world...

  10. This week lesson I learnt what are the three ethics: Utilitarian,Libertarins and Aristotle.

For Utilitarian, there is a formula by Jeremy Bentham, more pleasure less pain. By looking at the trolley, doctor and patients experiment from powerpoint slides. There is right or wrong decision due to your honest action and reaction response. Also the argument to support your decision. The four hallmarks of utilitarianism are consequentialism, hedonism, maximalism, universalism.

For Libertarins, only care about ownself, adding up all the pleasures and pain to increase utility. The right to be free and choose to live the way they want and respect.

For Aristotle, do what is right that people should deserve on virtues worthy of honour and reward.

I think that do what is right and deserve what people should have is much better than the other two ethics. In conclusion, there is no wrong or right decision. It just how you show your reaction.

  11. Utilitarianism or another way to name them would be consequentialist, as they’re a group of people who actually based their rightness of an action on the result, whereby if the action they take would result in happiness or reduce pain on the majority, it is right, or they call it attained utility. One way to look the way they do things would be, MAX( ∑happiness-∑unhappiness). Pretty much like communism to me.

Libertarians basically have the rights to everything that concerns them, from liberty to their daily lives and freedom most importantly.Under Libertarian’s law, there is no taxation, as taxation implies to them as slavery. Their way of thinking is that the money is My hard-earned money, why should I give it to others & none can take it from me because what is mine remain as mine, nothing to with others, so having to pay tax=force to work for government=slavery. As only they own themselves, nobody else. In addition Libertarians have no religions, it is a free-thinker society, which is why I believed that it could be one of the reasons as to why they never realized that their thinking is downright self-centered.

As for the society of Aristotle, what is right is determined by giving people what they deserved. But before that, what he/she did must be worthy of the honour & reward.

In my Opinion, there isn't really much of what is right and what is wrong. It pretty much depends on the way one is being brought up and the different perspective that we've. As different views would result in different answer to something as to if it is RIght--or--Wrong.

  12. Utilitarianism is greatest happiness and least pain for the greatest number of people. This is more like communist as the government does things to make people happy. There are pros and cons about this as it might benefit the majority people but what about the minorities?

Libertarians are about freedom where people are free from slavery which in their term is, taxation. This is more like a selfish thinking as they think that their money is their own and it shouldn't be given to others.

Aristotle is when people get what they did and its through their own hardwork thats why they are able to get the ultimate reward.

In my own opinion, i feel that Aristotle is the best for me. As lazy people get what they deserve while hardworking people get what they deserved as well. It is a very fair decision.

  13. There are many new words and terms I have learnt this week about Ethics. I've been hearing a lot of the word "Ethics" but I didn't really stop and ponder about what does it really mean. But this week we learnt about Ethics and other terms Utilitarianism, Libertarian and Aristotle approach to Ethics.

Firstly Utilitarianism is like being a communist. It appears something like communism because, it cares of only the consequence, and it asks according to more pleasure and less pain. Also, i the consequences also affects everyone equally.

Libertarian, is only caring about oneself and not anybody else. It is selfish but I have also learnt in Libertarian that every one has the right to be free and choose to live on the way they want to.

Lastly, Aristotle, virtues worthy of the honor and reward determines what the people deserve to receive.

Overall, this week's lesson is very meaningful because we've got to think really hard think of certain situation. But as said, it is really different if you have experienced it, or is it happening to you, because we might not act, based on what we say.

  14. Utilitarianism refers to the action which produces the greatest happiness and least pain for the greatest number of people.

Libertarian refers to intrinsic right that ever individual has that cannot be violated. If we respect the individual’s right to liberty, in the long run, utility is maximised.

Aristotle refers to giving people what they deserve and to determine what they deserve, we must first determine what are the virtues worthy of honour & reward.

In my opinion, aristotle is a better approach as it is the least selfish. However, there are no right or wrong approaches as every person has different approaches and it depends on their background and also their community.

  15. This week , it basically reflects on our morals . A number of us were asked to made decisions that we don’t normally make in our daily life . However , there were no right or wrong answers . It was to see what some of us do when we faced a situation , like having to choose to save 5 people for the life of 1 ? or having the choice to kill 1 person to save 5 people .
My opinions on Utilitarianism, Libertarian and Aristotle approaches . It tells me that many of us can view something differently . Such as the issue on the women having incest with the father . Even though this is morally wrong , but as seen as Utilitarian perspective, it is ethically correct . Because Utilitarian point of view , it says that we ought to do that which produces the greatest happiness and least pain for the greatest number of people . Thus with linkage with the Utilitarian point of view , its obviously ethically correct because it is pleasure and doesn’t cause any pain .

For libertarian point of view , it says that individuals have the right to be free and choose to live the way they want provided they respect the liberty of others . Therefore , I feel that libertarian views are very selfish as it says that you only care about you and yourself only .

For Aristotle point of view , it says that doing what is right giving people what they deserve . Thus , its like the case study that is shown to us : The purple heart medal . This is a medal awarded to those soldiers that sacrifice themselves in times of war . Therefore , it tell us that we must earn what we want to get what we deserve .

  16. In the lecture about ethics , i learnt about Utilitarianism , producing greatest happiness and least pain for the greatest number of people .
The Four Hallmarks (Consequentialism , Hedonism , Maximalism , Universalism) and the greatest pleasure for the greatest number is what we always want in life .

Libertarian’s view of Taxation is slavery and i agree with that , it does not give someone the freedom of expression and action . Its all about me , myself and I . So we will make our make our own choices and decisions .

As for the society of Aristotle , we must first determine what are the virtues worthy of honour & reward.

I feel that there is no right and wrong in these . People with different perspective will argue about the rights and wrongs . Its just how someone views it and the way they treat it .

  17. during the cis lessons we learnt about utilitarian , libertarian and aristotle.

utilitarian is about maximising the greatest amount of happiness while feeling the minimal emotional pain. with four hallmarks , the consequences , hedonism , maximalism and universalism.

libertarians are very selfish and they only think about themselves so whatever decisions they make are only beneficial to them or they choose to make that certain decision that they want.

on the other hand , aristotle is about promoting virtues , moral ethics. however, what virtues are worth promoting and they are morally right?

  18. Firstly, I have learnt what utilitarianism is, it is the submission of happiness minus the submission of unhappiness. Most of the time, people who believe in utilitarianism only focus on getting the result of more pleasure than pain. But in my point of view, I do not agree with their opinion as I would rather have lesser happiness than putting others in pain, as it would be a cruel thing to see one suffer.

Next, Libertarian usually wants the right to life, the liberty and freedom. They are considered selfish people as they often do not put themselves in other’s stand; they just do things which will benefit them. I agree that most of us want more freedom in life, however, there’s a limit to everything. Personally, I would choose to have lesser freedom than to be selfish.

Lastly, Aristotle says that doing what is right means giving people what they deserve, which means that only when you have the virtues, than you are worth getting the good result.

In conclusion, it usually depends on the situation to differentiate if what we did is right or wrong. Different people have different perspective towards things they encounter; hence that is why there are different types of people who were categorized in different ethic groups.

  19. I've learn about utilitarianism, Libertarian and Aristotle. From Utilitarianism, I've learn that people live with more happiness and less pain which would be equally treated among one another. Example, the a boy sold his kidney in order to buy an ipad2. The boy is happy because he got his ipad2, the guy who buy the kidney is happy because he got his kidney and the guy who sell ipad2 is also happy. Therefore under Utilitarianism, this is not a wrong thing to do. Libertarian means that people work hard for their own. In short, i can say it means selfish, but also have their own rights. Example under Libertarian, the boy got his own rights to sell his kidney and buy an ipad2. So under Libertarian, it is not a wrong thing to do for the boy to sell his kidney. Aristotle basically means something you do must worth the doing. From my own view, i think that the boy is not worth selling his kidney for ipad2. He can earn money to buy it. The kidney was given by his parents, how will his parents feel if he do that? So i think it wasn't worth trading a kidney for an ipad2.
