Week 11

Reflect on this week's material on privacy. Discuss how it has effected your views on online privacy and what you are going to do to protect yourself in future.

  1. I've learnt that privacy in this world has been violated due to technology as it is needed to monitor people, traffics, friends and families. Devices that helps us in our daily life is actually something that invades our privacy as well. For example, Smart phones is a very good example as it helps us connect to the world no matter where we are but yet it sends information of ourself to other people without us knowing as it is on default settings.

Thus, while living in this world we have little privacy as we are being watched no matter where we are. In the streets, in a classroom and in a public transport. CCTV is essential as it can help police solve crime cases by using it to find the criminals and it can help prevent crimes as well.

After knowing about this privacy intrusion, I feel less secure when posting anything on the internet. As it might just leak out to everyone in world.

Online privacy is less secure than I ever thought it was. It is a very vulnerable protection of privacy.

In the future I would be careful about what I post on the internet and make sure that my information would not be leaked out.
I would configure my own privacy settings which I feel comfortable with as well.

  3. This has changed my views about online privacy that anyone can do a simple Google search on my name will show various information, where I stay, my birthday or my HP number. All of this can be easily found online, even photos I've taken with my iPhone will be Geo Tagged by default so if I were to upload any of this photos online it will show where I took this photos information that I did not want to reveal in the first place.

To protect my information from being revealed online. I will take caution when uploading any personal information on the internet and make the personal information that I do not wish to be revealed. So even if I have done all of the above I will still not be safe from online privacy invasion, as once it is out there it will always be out there so a extensive Google search can easily bring out the information about me. So I will always take precaution when posting personal information, I will ask myself do I really need to post this information online before I really post it online.

  4. The technology nowadays has changed the way we live and even through the ways of our own personal account. Like Facebook,Twitter,MSN are some of the nowadays social networking that has the ability to post private posts.

On the video privacy is dead, it has shown me that the internet has become a source of network to invade our privacy through email, chat or social networking.

CCTV are use for security measures but it has invaded our privacy to roam freely.Nowadays an email alone is possible to reveal all our personal information because our email now is being used to login in into several websites or used to authentication into a website.

Even now wherever we go we are constantly being watched by even our own personal belonging since we won't know until our privacy has been invaded.

Protecting my privacy now almost seem impossible but theres always a solution. One of them is by creating a private/personal email for work and only to person you know only and creating a public email for social networks and public viewing by putting an alias name. Trying not to expose to much personal information may prevent myself from being invaded.

  5. Firstly, privacy is aboutthe ability of an individual or group to seclude themselves or information about themselves and thereby reveal themselves selectively. I think online, you don't really have a privacy because everyone still can see the pictures and videos you upload even though you set them to private for only you friends to see. For example, there was a man and his wife with their honeymoon photos. They set their pictures on private on Facebook but once they posted it to twitter it was totally a different thing. The pictures were seen online for the public to view and it was not private.

From this lesson I learnt that there is no such thing as "Private" in setting your album or videos. Well, maybe there is but, once they say it is "Private" it does not really means it is completely private. I also learnt that we must minimize posting private photos or more of our photos online, because some of these pictures might be used by other people online without us knowing it. For me, now that I learn this I will not really post much pictures online, in blogs, or twitter. I rather keep it to myself to assure the safety of the photographs, that it will not go into wrong hands. Because once you posted it online, sooner or later someone will be able to find it, there is this one person that will always find it.

For the second session, I learnt that people can track us just by signing in to our e-mail on our phone or laptop. I can understand that you can track using phone, but I was shocked that using computer or laptop we can track people too. Now I know that someone, somewhere in Google, knows where I am now, roughly. I think that having surveillance cameras would be good choice to a certain extent. It can reduce the crimes, it is better than nothing, but they should know that there are other places which you can't really put these cameras like the toilet or the bathroom. Having too much of these cameras would not be really good. I think most people would think that they rather sacrifice their privacy for their safety, but we can't really say this because in some point of time at some place, we want to do things which we do not want other people to see, like some embarrasing mistakes on the road. But then again, its rather to be safe than sorry.

  6. At first , i thought that internet is always safe because passwords are protected and profiles can change to private settings but actually the hackers can hack into our information very easily . I also realize that whatever we do in the computer ; like downloaded stuffs from browser can be tracked . Whenever i received an email , i will tend to open it because i want to clear my mails . After the lesson on privacy , i am aware of which mails are not to be open .

I am going to protect myself in the future by not disclosing too much information online . I will not disclose any real information onto facebook , twitter and other social websites because it can be easily acquired by other people . I will be aware of email warnings on computer views or appeals for donation and also don't respond to emails which are sent by people i don't know .

  7. after going through the lesson , i feel that there is no privacy online. If your information is online ,almost everyone can have access to it . As part of the lesson activity , we were told to search for our own information or our friends' information online , to my surprise you can know pretty much everything about your friends' life if you are lucky.
immediately , i changed my social networking settings for privacy control and took down whatever information that is online. However, if you share a common name with many other people , its actually very hard to gain information about you because they would generate a lot of irrelevant searches that people want to find.
many of the internet services you use actually keep your personal information such as location and email when you use it on your mobile. hence they sell your information to other companies who might need it such company include facebook and google.

RFID , radio frequency identification in short , is a very dangerous technology , in any case you were to lose your identification card , people have a chance to clone it and take over your identity and gain access to information that are under your privilege.

what you thought that would be a very convenient technology could actually invade your privacy. It would be the GPS, global positioning system , allows people to actually know you where are exactly. It's actually the same as having someone stalking you , theres no running away from that.

the most controversial of all would be the CCTVs , known as closed-circuit televisions in short. people are actually watching you. Everything you do in a shop or in the streets , are being recorded and even if the purpose was to prevent crimes , most of the recorded footages are not usable in court to charge the criminal.hence it will be a waste of money.on the other hand , i believe that if you have done nothing wrong and have nothing to hide you do not have to worry about CCTVs.

in future , i will not post personal information online and will by all means keep them from being available on the web.

  8. i have learnt that online privacy is very insecure.i was less secure that i thought.i have also learnt that the technology now has made our world more and more insecure.we are exposed to these technology which will help us but in fact, invading our privacy. the video of the smalll little 5 year old girl getting hack on facebook and have her photos uploaded on child pornography website has shocked me.even though we have passwords for our various accounts, but it is still very easy to find a hacking device to hack into the account of someone just by searching online. i have also learnt not to give my email to other people as and when i like. it is best to have two emails. one is the personal email, while the other one is for work and school use. hackers can hack into our account and retrieve information very easily when they got thier hands on our email address.

i will be more careful next time. i will not sign up for any applications or accounts without hesitation, which needs my email in order to have the application or the account.i often download games and applications on my laptop which needs me to sign up in order to download.but after learning from this lesson, i will think further whether this site could be trusted and whether it is very necessary for me to give the email address. If there is other website that does not need my email address and has the same thing that i want, i would definitely choose that.

  10. In this lesson , i learnt that there are many technology in the current society that help us in our daily lives . All these technology raises our standard of living , making us live in a safer society .

But with so advanced technology , there are many ways that our personal information to be leaked on the internet . The GPS is a good way to let you know where is your current location and allows you to find your way around . But others on the internet can also use the GPS to track you down even if we do not want it . With the help of the CCTVs which are located all over the place , it lets the pick-pockets think twice before striking because they rick the chance of being caught by the cameras . But you loses your privacy because the cameras will constantly film your actions .

Technology have both pros and cons to our lives but is whether are we comfortable with the technology in our lives and adapt to it .

  12. In this lesson, I have learn about technology privacy issues. For example, types of technology such as webcam, cctv and RFID which invaded our privacy by locating our locations. I have also know about London has the most CCTVs in their country to prevent crimes. However, to what our lecturer have shown us on a video that the crime rates did not declined even though it has million
    of CCTVs in London.
In future, to minimize the invasion of my privacy by other people:
First, I will not reveal my information unnecessary.
Second, no revealing of email address to anyone they might access to my location through Google when they access using my computer.
Lastly, if really there is a need for giving out my email address, I will set 2 accounts for safety purpose.
Hence in overall, invading privacy using technology is not surprising to me in this technologically inclined society. Hence we can only minimize being invade instead of preventing, as it is impossible to avoid.

  13. Before this lesson, i am very open to Social Media such as facebook and blog. Example, i post pictures, video and update my status without even thinking if anyone will intrude my privacy. Everytime i sign up for an website account, i will use my own hotmail and i didnt even have a spare email. I love posting pictures of my friend and I, I also love to post video's of myself singing. Take a look at my blog >> www.samiion-noimas.blogspot.com <<

After the lesson, i realise how important is privacy. Just like the girl photo was being taken for child-pornography, so i realise i need to keep my things private so that people wont make use of my photos. I also created a new email account for other purpose, other then my personal email account. I also learn how GPS track people, how the EZ-link card system works by Radio Frequency Identification(RFID) and how London make use of Close Circuit Television(CCTV) to catch criminals.

Protecting against privacy is impossible? If you want to maintain privacy online, you have to restrict access to online website and do not give out personal information, unless it is for working purpose.

  14. Privacy is a matter that everyone in the world is concern about especially online.

Privacy has affected my views on online privacy. At first, I thought that it is safe when posting something on the internet but I found out that it is not safe as the setting is usually set to public so my posting will be able to be seen by public not only with friends and family members. Now with the advancement of smartphone, GPS has been embedded to the devices to track us wherever we are and also photos nowadays are added with geotagging technology which allows you to know where you take the picture.

What I am going to do to protect myself now and in the future is to be aware with the emails sent to me, check a website's privacy policy, deal with companies I know, report to police for frauds if it happen, not showing password to public(inc. email), do not post something that will expose email address, not responding to spammers and people I do not know and also reveal my credit card number when shopping online.

  15. I have learn that online privacy is the privacy over the internet and to the world. It is the ability to control what information one reveals to the internet and to control who can access that information from the internet.

I also learn that sometimes we might leak out some information to the internet such as smartphones. If we upload an image, it can that geotag to everyone online. As a result, letting others know my current location and my appearance.

Online privacy can be a threat to us as there will be information about us being post online such as facebook. We check-in at places and putting our personal information such as email, home address or birth date at the information column. This allows people to know our exact current locations and there are stalkers who might stalk us and knowing all our information through the internet.

Therefore, I can protect myself from online privacy by reporting to the police if I had been deceived or defrauded online, putting my account on a private account so that only friends whom I know can access to view my profile. I can also take safety precautions when uploading images or videos. As technologies these days can geotag.

  16. In this week part one lesson, I've learn that there is no privacy online at all. When online, we have control to how much infomation we want to share to strangers however, if they hack into any social networking sites, they can obtain all the informations they want about us. For example, in Facebook, we can actually choose which information we want to show other users or what we don't want to show them.

Pictures posted on social networking sites is also very easy to obtain if other users have access to it and they may use the pictures in the wrong way like posting it on some other websites and access the account to do wrong things. Now, I've got to make sure my profile on social networking sites is make private, so that others have no access to my information shared among my friends. I also learn that we should not respond to emails that is sent by people you do not know and openly reveal your credit card number when you are shopping online.

In part two lessons, I've learn about different technologies used in modern days such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Global Positioning System (GPS) and Closed Circuit Television (CCTV). RFID can be used for many things, example, manufacturing, transportation, health care, life sciences, in library, tracking etc. GPS make use of satellites to determine position of an object or a place. In order to have access to GPS, we need to be in open air where the satellites can access to them.

Also, when GPS is enabled on an iPhone, people can actually track where are you when you take a certain picture. This causes everyone to have no privacy at all. CCTV is used for surveilling people or traffics for crimes or even traffic accident. It actually helps the government to prevent crimes.

  17. I learn how people can obtain your information through search engine easily within seconds. I was shocked at the speed how people can find my information. I will restrict access on the social network accounts to prevent the information being spread out.

Also RFID cards is now commonly used like ez-link card, student card and it's very convenient but it has risk of being cloned onto another card thus the person who cloned the card can access the room or loan books using my identity. In order to prevent this incident from happening , try not to lose the card.

  18. This week , what I can say that whatever is on the internet is never safe . Whatever is posted on the internet will be there forever , even when you delete a photo that you posted on the internet , it might still be there as people might make copies of it and post multi images of you on the internet . There are also applications such as the GeoTagging photos with GPS enabled iPhone . It is when u take a picture with your iPhone and post on the net , his GeoTagging application atomically triangulates your position on a map and shows where are you . Thus many people will know where you are and its no longer a secret if u want to keep it .
There are a certain things that can be done to try to protect myself from online invasion . You could create a public email account that can be used to sign up for accounts such as from youtube , google , etc while u have a private email account where your friends only know about it . This is prevent outsiders from knowing your private information because with your email in the hands of other people , many private information can be found . Another one precaution is to never disclose your password to anybody , even if websites asked for it , because websites NEVER asks for your passwords , so never ever disclose it .
There is also one more thing , don’t use the internet , but lets face it , we cant live without the internet

  20. Online privacy, I've never put much thought into it before, as it didn't occur to me that many others out there could be viewing it. Not just viewing, they could even use that information for their own benefits at the cost of others.

Furthermore, internet has built a connection with each and every individuals, allowing information to be easier viewed by others. Increasing the chances of your information being used by others if they manage to access to the information.

In additions, default privacy settings might not always be ideal, as such, now I'll always double check my personal privacy setting, displaying only what I want to show and nothing else. As the outcome could be disastrous and I wouldn't want to take that chance.

Lastly, always remind self that many others could be planning to make use the information that one shares, thus, take caution on what to share and what is best not to. Be Vigilant.

  21. What are the different types of privacy technology around the world by storing different types of devices like CCTV,RFID and etc around the place. Using those devices can trace down what is happening around the location, the sercuity that the location is safe or unsafe.

And the types of privacy that happen on website which public user can track on it.Example like facebook, twitter, blogger and etc.

My views on online privacy is that now the technology on privacy is highly affected to us,which the users can track down where we are and our personal details.

I can protect my privacy by changing the setting to private to avoid unknown user to track down my personal data.Or I can block the user to access to my personal details.
Example like blogger, is a type of personal life web, to unable the unknown user to access into the blog, a html password code can prevent it.

  22. In this week’s lesson, I learnt more about Privacy on internet.
Firstly, I feel sad for the little girl and the couple whose photo was used for the wrong purpose. There is not privacy online. From this lesson, I am more aware of the fact that if I do not have the proper privacy setting, my information can be easily exploited by other people. It is important to make amendment on privacy settings to ensure that information will not be leaked out.
Secondly, I learnt about different technologies used in modern days such as RFID, GPS and CCTV. GPS make use of satellites to determine position of an object or place. In order to have access to GPS, we need to be in an open air where satellites can access to it. I felt that we have not privacy as people are able to track our whereabouts from our smartphone. The Idea of having CCTV surveillance of every street in London is really scary. It is uncomfortable to know that we are being watched. On the other hand, I agree that it will eventually help to prevent crimes.
In conclusion i feel that this week lesson is interesting as it gives a better understand of privacy on internet. I will be careful about what I post on the internet and make sure that my personal information would not be leaked out.

  23. I have learnt that there’s internet privacy and have learnt more about it from this week lesson. Being able to control what information one reveal on the internet and get control on who can access that information is called the internet privacy. I have seen several negative consequences when one post pictures or videos online. One of the cases was that an employee of a certain company posted a video clip of the company dinner online, and was fired, as he had ‘breached the company’s policy’. In my opinion, I think the action taken by the company was too harsh, as the man did not know there’s such policy and have no intention damaging the subjects or the company image. Hence, from this case, I have learnt that if one wants to put pictures or videos online, one should change it to private setting to prevent anyone from using your pictures to ruin your reputation.

Next, I have learnt more about some technologies that are used in modern days, one example is the Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID), it is an automatic contact-less identification and data capture using radio frequency signal. Its purpose is to track, trace, monitor, trigger and perform action. Some of the other technologies include Global Positioning System (GPS) and Closed Circuit Television (CCTV). These technologies are rather useful in our daily life. For example, my father uses the GPA to help him find his way to a desired destination. However if he were to be in a sheltered area, the GPA will not be able to detect where he is. Hence most of the people will choose Assistant Global Positioning System (AGPA), which can detect one in any places. Lastly, CCTV are used for security measures, it can be useful when crime happen. However, it will invade our privacy somehow as we go freely on the street. In my point of view, I strongly agree that it is wrong for people to invade other’s privacy.
