I think government did well for building the network infrastructure(e.g Fibre Optics, cable broadband), providing help for needy students(NEU PC Plus Programme, Broadband Only Scheme, INSPIRE Fund).
All these things bridge the gap allowing those students who do not / not able to afford a computer to own a laptop or desktop, allowing business to create new model while utilizing the current resources.
The government capitalize on the youth and the SME/MNE on Singapore but what happen to elderly? Most of the elderly are illterate to computer or/and english so they can't have access to internet.
Library vs Internet
Library has lots of information but sometimes the book you want get , get loaned out or not in this library. You will need to go to the other library just to get that book which wasted lots of traveling time but the information is correct. As for internet, the information may be junk or overflow might have to spent some time to filter out the information. That's why people bring laptop to library so that save time if they cannot find the book.
I thought the activity in coming up with doing presentation was pretty good, as previously we've not work together for work purposes. It allows me to have a peek into what hidden-potential my classmate have, which gears me into striving better than them.
In addition, I've came to realise that infact our government has made tremendous effort to narrow the digital divide, while before all I knew was to enjoy life, enjoy the free access without knowing all the efforts that are being put behind the scenes, but now I know.
This activity has taught me about various things things the government has done to aid in the digital divide, which I didn't know about before so this has been an interesting learning experience for me.
The theme of this activity e.g. splitting into groups to shown that technology does assists in making research easier because technology is right at our fingertips as compared to before the internet came about, when we have a question we couldn't do anything about it now when that happens you can simply look it up in Google, but also because so much information can be retrieved there will also be information overload making some to doubt the validity of some of the content on the internet.
-Digital Divide- The activity is pretty fun as we get to go on an adventurous trip in the NP library in search of the topic: "Digital Divide".
Overall, I think the government and IDA did well in proposing to help the needy and senior citizens to cope with the advance technological generation in using the computer and internet.
Due to the fast pace in developing High-Technology, senior citizens tend to forget and left behind. Hence, i hope the government would be able to assist them more in the upcoming years ahead.
-Learning Experience- Instead of using the Internet, the library has all the effective points and facts plus all of the information found in the library is accurate accordingly as some of the book/magazines are based on the company direct explanation.
Compared to the the internet some information may or may not be true as the internet might slip in some gossips, rumours and some inaccurate facts that could be misleading. All the more the internet can be quite effective if search effectively and not being bias. It is also easy to get info if one needs it fast by accessing the internet.
My opinion is that Library can be as much fun as the internet in gathering information.
From this activity , even though i knew that Singapore will be greatly powered by the IT world in the near future . I didn't know the government put in so much effort in the past such as creating schemes like NEU PC PLUS or the Silver Info-comm Initiative , just to help students or the elderly to engage themselves in the IT world .
i can say the Government did quite a good job as from what i researched , from 1999 , one of the schemes helped more than 20000 families to receive assistance to have computers to use
My learning experience from this activity is that we must have time management as we are only given a time limit to do our work , and we must manage it well
From this meaningful activity , i learnt alot about Digital Divide and the teamwork spirit in the powerpoint presentation .
For Digital divide , i have learnt that the Singapore government is putting a lot of effort in putting the latest technology in our lives to make it more efficient and accessible to us . With the latest technology , the old and needy people would not have worry so much about their daily lives as the technology will help them overcome some difficulties . Nowadays , from young to old . Almost every single person in the nation is using IT in daily lives .
Just a few days ago , a baby and her mother sat beside me in the train . I noticed the baby 's mother used her ipad to teach her child , ABC . I think it is very meaningful and fascinating in the way that a child can learn so many things just within a touch from a technology device .
From the library trip , i felt that there was Teamwork spirit because we have to rush to find the books regarding the topic and we have to write as many notes as possible . During the presentation , i thought that we were doing a good job ! We tried our best as we were all sweating in the library while on the run of searching for the books as we knew that the activity was somehow graded and we do not want to lose any marks .
It was a meaningful experience and i would hope that there will be such trip again so that we would have chance to buy bubble tea again :)
There are many things I learned this week. Firstly about what Singapore is trying to achieve by 2015 for all the Singaporean citizens. The Government plans to build Info-Comm bridges by 2015. The Singapore Government has many ways on severing the Digital Divide in Singapore. A few of them are NEU PC Scheme, Improving the Internet Public Access (eg. Wireless@Sg). Another example would be the three internet service providers providing low/subsidised internet subscription rate for the citizens to have an internet connection. This leads me to think about the difference in efforts of Singapore and my own country. Singapore really does well to its citizens by providing these services compared to my country. I don’t say that my country is not addressing to this problem, but there are still many places to go to severe the digital divide. Singaporean citizens are really lucky for this opportunity.
Secondly I have also realized that young people are really in a digital world nowadays. When we went to Library for the activity, I thought it was easy to find a book about the research topic but it was difficult. First, we had no clue when we can locate a specific book, when we did there were so many books related but we really don’t know whether there is a relevant information that we have to read each sentence to see whether it’s relevant or not. We found a FEW books which has a FEW information about the topic. To be honest it was really tiring compared to just typing the topic/information you want to google.com.
Thirdly, I personally feel that we should read books more as what Mr Andrew Tan had said, information found in newspapers and books are more reliable than the information found in the net. We can avoid finding false information by reading newspapers and reference books. When we were in the library finding information, I had this feeling of sudden shock or headache because it’s been a awhile since the last time I read a books. Feels like information overload, as we were panicking because we only found few information and its almost an hour. Indeed finding information sitting comfortably in your chair is best but sometimes it’s better to go in a long way by reading reference books. And we can also combine information from the net and the books and compare them for the information to be most reliable (:
I really learnt a lot from this lesson and I feel lucky that I have experienced the not-so-digital-world and the new-digital-world. And I really feel thankful to the evolution as it helps us students and all people in many ways (:
In my point of view, the government have done a really great job in helping the disabled or low income families by providing them with new computers and broadband network at affordable price. With this implementation of attempts, it will not only make it convenient to the needy families, as well as to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor. It means that the people who are poor or physically disabled are able to equip with certain and necessary technology skills. It can benefit them in their future careers and social network. However, from all the presentations I have seen it shows that the government made the effort mainly for the youths and neglected the elderly who are also not well equipped with infocomm technology. From the presentation of my classmates, I have found out that the sources came from each of them are quite reliable. There were 2 groups who are finding the sources of information by going to the library and find some books which related to this topic. As can be seen, they can actually find the sources similar to those who were surfing the internet to find the sources. Hence, it can be seen that the sources in the website is actually quite true. However, lecturers have also taught us that not all of the sources given in the website we have found are reliable. Thus, from my point of view, we should not just depend on the sources we found on website. Going to library to get a reliable source are not an easy task too. We have to know which categories the source we wanted and sometimes we are unable to find the books as they were either on loan or somebody just misplaces the book in some other place. In conclusion, through this week’s learning, I know more about our government’s effort in bridging the digital divide and the learning journey with group mates in finding the reliable sources in the library was amazing.
during week 2 , i learnt about information literacy. there is a lot of information out there in the web, but how many are trustworthy and accurate? the trick is seeking out the information that you want and from a credible source.
not just that , i also learnt that the majority of the human population are not information literate , most coming from undeveloped countries. on the second lesson , my group volunteered to go to the library , we were tasked to research on how the Singapore government had bridged the digital divide in Singapore. the tough part was to find a reliable and correct information , we went through the shelves to find the desired information that we required. i learnt that the government had invested in companies to make high speed broadbands available to all of singapore and came up with schemes such as NEU , to provide the needy families with a chance of learning information literacy. hence singapore can progress as a nation and no one will be left behind. next , the highlight of the second lesson , the powerpoint presentations . If mr . andrew had not pointed it out , i think we wouldn't have realised it. If we have no powerpoint slides projected on the screen and we were to present purely by reading from a script , the audience would easily lose focus. i liked the lesson because it was very interactive. we were not just sitting there listening but we were to get the information ourselves
As a foreigner, I realized that the Singapore government had done a good job in bridging the digital divide.
Firstly, the government had helped the poor, needy and low income families and also the disabled to own a brand new computer bundle with software and 3 years of free broadband subscription at an affordable price. (NEU PC Plus Programme).
Other than that, the government is trying to close the gap between elderlies (age 50 and above) and youths by giving elderlies opportunities to learn more about computer so that they are not out-dated and make use of the computer to the fullest. The elderlies also will be taught on how to blog which youths this day do. (Eg. An old man can send an email to his grandson overseas). This is the Silver Info-comm Initiative.
I think the government had done a good job in doing their job bridging the digital divide. The iN2015 initiatives that the government introduced has helped to bridged the digital divide. As a foreigner, i feel that the government of singapore made a great initiative to solve this problem compared to my country. This is further supported by the iN2015 Goal which says "To be the first in the world in harnessing infocomm to add value to the economy and society.". This shows the determination of the government of Singapore.
From what i experienced from the activity i had this friday. I felt that nowadays youths are "netizens". They relied on the internet so much in finding informations and it includes me. When my group went to the library to do our activity, we found it difficult to find books related to topics and informations regarding the government attempts and efforts in bridging the digital divide. Furthermore, we found it difficult to find the books as we cannot use any computing equipment and library's computers to find the book. We did asked the librarian to check the place of the books. It took us more than half an hour just to find a book that is related to the topic. We had to go up and down at first to find the book and we found it very exhausting. We were lucky that we were able to found the iN2015 book but there are a lot of informations regarding the government efforts so in the end we decided to borrow the book.
When we were black in class, i found it quite fun to do the powerpoint slides and presentation. What I learnt from the lesson/lecture is that books are more reliable compared to internet however that does note mean that information on the net is unreliable (e.g. wikipedia). I had fun during the activity and i hoped to have the activity in the future. I maybe exhausted during the activity as the result of going up and down but it's worth it because i learn new things.
Firstly, I get to know that Information found in books or newspapers are more reliable than in the net. Although we could find a lot of information from the web, we still have to seek out the information from a credible source. Secondly, I learnt that majority of the human population from undeveloped country are not information literate. In my point of view, I think the government has put in a lot of effort in bridging the digital divide. They had invested in companies to improve the internet Public Access so we could connect freely to the Internet nearly everywhere in Singapore. They also introduced schemes such as NEU, to help low income families by giving them a chance of learning information literacy. (E.g. it is by providing them with computers and network.) With the help of government, they are able to equip with certain technology skills. Hence, it will bridge the gap between the rich and poor.
When I first told we have to do research, I was a bit 'sian' because i didn't really like doing it. As when i read about the topic, i became more 'sian' because i don't even know what is bridging the digital divide means. Hence i went to google it and i knew what it means.
After all the researching and the presentation from every group, i realised that the government had put in a lot of money and effort trying to bridge the digital gap by investing and providing free internet access in public area and teaching the people to learn how to use the computer to surf the net.
From this Activity, I learn 3 things. Firstly, I learn that Singapore government's effort and attempts to build a higher technology. Secondly, i learn about Information Literacy. People using books for research against people that use website for research. Last but not least, the Team work between classmates.
1- I just realise that Singapore Government build 3 types of infocomm bridges, to help bridge the digital device. Firstly, governemt build NEU PC plus to help needy students to have computers and internet cable. Sencondly, the Infoccom Accessibility centre. This is to help disabilities people to catch up with technology nowadays. Training will also be done for them. Thirdly, the Silver Infocomm initiative. This is to help the elderly to get connected in the digital age. Elderly will be taught to use mobile phones and computers.
2- I realise that people who use the website to do research will have a lot of things to share. However those things may not be right but if we go library to borrow for books, information on books is 90% right.
3- Lastly, I also realise that people in my class co-ordinate well with team members. When we are using the website to do research, 4 of us will do our part. Person A will research for attempts of Government, B will research for theirs efforts, C will be researching for Picture's of related topic and D will be editing those research and put them up onto the slideshow. My role was being a person D, i summarize what A and B have give me and i do the PowerPoint slides. I wanted to make it nicer but you said no need to be so nice. So i try to make those point form look short and sweet !
From this activity, i have learnt alot of things.i didnt know that the singapore government has done so much for our countries over the years, until now.i didnt know abt the schemes and plans that they come up with to help those who are not able to buy the computers and not even thinking abt able to use the computer.
i have also learnt that there are actually good things and bad things about the internet.using the internet, yes, we can have alot of informations fast and we can do our work fast, but there are cons too.there are way to much informtion on the web. causing us unable to decide which one to use.this create a big problem for us, therefore the amount of time for us to finish the project work needs to be lengthened.while books in the librart, though hard to find, are actually quite resourceful.i do not have to worry about deciding which information i should use.
i have learn that time management is very important.we must learn to manage our time well, so that we can complete our assignments on time. And through this activity, i have learnt that teamwork plays a very important role too.
I feel that going library and do research make me more sleepy due to the air-con and quiet environment. We manage to do a research in library by taking down important key points. Although we did not present out with powerpoint slides. But I’m sure that we will do a better one with the role of teamwork next time round.
From what I understand is.. Singapore Government did their best job to help those residents to overcome their needs. Example:Teaching old folks to use computer, they can actually do online doctor appointment without walking to the hospital/clinic to book a appointment. It is more convenient to them.
Building wireless internet access around Singapore areas, eg: Macdonald, Starbucks, Schools and etc. With wireless, we can do online shopping (ebay), i-banking etc.
By looking at the classified ads on jobs and you’ll see how singapore job market has changed every year. There are gobbles of pages of jobs for professionals, skilled technicians and business graduates that offer high pay.As a result, Singapore government provides them to attend courses to equip their technology skills.
There is also a NEU PC plus programme that supports low-income household with school-going children or disabled family member to own a brand new computer bundle with software and 3 years of free broadband subscription at an affordable price.
"Singapore may well become a high tech country in 15 years. But for the future, Life will be darn difficult for older,lower-educated workers." by:Seah Chiang Nee.
I felt that this activity is very meaningful. For me, I'm in the library team. It was a really nice experience walking around the library searching for books for the information. It allows me to know what kind of books are actually found in the library.
Due to the limited time, we had to rush through in finding books and information which is rather tough for me since I'm usually a slow reader. I had learned that information in books, magazines and newspaper are very accurate unlike the Internet which have an overload of information.
This activity let me know that bridging digital devices is really important so that everyone in the country could follow up the advanced technology which is coming up in near future. I learned about different schemes, for example PC Re-use Scheme, through my classmates' researches and iN2015.
Therefore, I believe in near future, every household, regardless poor or rich, around Singapore will have internet access and computers to use.
It was the first time my classmates and I started learning computing in society. It was a pure new module for us. The first activity we have was to do a research on Singapore government’s attempt and effort in bridging the digital divide. We were spilt into two groups, one group will do their research in the library and the other will remain in class. For my group, we went to the library, due to the limited time given and that we are not allowed to use the internet to do our research; we have to find the most accurate information needed based on the materials available in the library. I started searching and found some books that were useful hence started writing down the important points.
From the research, I found out that the government in Singapore have done a great job in developing a more advanced technology and make it accessible and useful for people around the nation, including the needy and the elderly. As I always believe that regarding how rich or how poor you are, in Singapore, everyone is supposed to be treated equally. Hence the government have proven it right, even the needy families can own a brand new computer that is subsidies by the government and they were equipped with basic technology skills.
When we are back to class, we have to present our research to the class. My group didn’t have time to make any PowerPoint slides, hence we summarise what we have found and share it with the class. This was the first time we have to do a presentation. I didn’t present it well, however this shall remain as an experience for me and I believe that with more of this experiences it will definitely help me improve myself on my presentation skill. Importantly, I have learned that having confidence will helped make the presentation better.
Overall, this activity not only enriched me with information on the advanced technology in Singapore, it also allowed me to realised that the materials like the books in the library is more reliable and useful as compared to the information found in the internet. As the information found on net might have their pros and cons. For example, there might be false information that will mislead us and the net might also provide us with overloaded information that will confuse us. Hence, it will be better if we were to spend some time doing research using materials like the books than just copying and paste from the net. In conclusion, I felt that this activity was an interesting and meaningful one.

It is a great experience as I not only get to learn about CIS but I am also able to get to know the school's library. As a freshman, I was unsure about the library in school but this lesson helped me learn more about it.
As the group that went to the library, I find that it consume more time finding information in the library. But it is the most concrete information as it is from reliable sources.
I was late for the lesson on Friday lesson , so i did not go to the library . I joined the group which is in the class to research on the problem of Digital Divide . We researched on the government attempts on resolving the Digital Divide . As we are living in the Digital Age , people owning computers are increasing . The government wants to to close up the Digital Divide in order for people to keep up with the technology . So the government aims to let every household to have a computer at home in order to keep up with the technology . -Jun Yuan

ReplyDeleteThe activity is pretty fun as we get to go on an adventurous trip in the NP library in search of the topic: "Digital Divide".

I don’t say that my country is not addressing to this problem, but there are still many places to go to severe the digital divide. Singaporean citizens are really lucky for this opportunity.
ReplyDeleteSecondly I have also realized that young people are really in a digital world nowadays.

ReplyDeleteWith this implementation of attempts, it will not only make it convenient to the needy families, as well as to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor.
ReplyDeletenot just that , i also learnt that the majority of the human population are not information literate , most coming from undeveloped countries.
on the second lesson , my group volunteered to go to the library , we were tasked to research on how the Singapore government had bridged the digital divide in Singapore.
the tough part was to find a reliable and correct information , we went through the shelves to find the desired information that we required.
i learnt that the government had invested in companies to make high speed broadbands available to all of singapore and came up with schemes such as NEU , to provide the needy families with a chance of learning information literacy. hence singapore can progress as a nation and no one will be left behind.
next , the highlight of the second lesson , the powerpoint presentations .
If mr . andrew had not pointed it out , i think we wouldn't have realised it.
ReplyDeleteFirstly, the government had helped the poor, needy and low income families and also the disabled to own a brand new computer bundle with software and 3 years of free broadband subscription at an affordable price.

ReplyDeleteIn my point of view, I think the government has put in a lot of effort in bridging the digital divide.
ReplyDeleteAfter all the researching and the presentation from every group, i realised that the government had put in a lot of money and effort trying to bridge the digital gap by investing and providing free internet access in public area and teaching the people to learn how to use the computer to surf the net.

From this Activity, I learn 3 things. Firstly, I learn that Singapore government's effort and attempts to build a higher technology. Secondly, i learn about Information Literacy. People using books for research against people that use website for research. Last but not least, the Team work between classmates.
ReplyDelete1- I just realise that Singapore Government build 3 types of infocomm bridges, to help bridge the digital device.

ReplyDeletei have also learnt that there are actually good things and bad things about the internet.using the internet, yes, we can have alot of informations fast and we can do our work fast, but there are cons too.there are way to much informtion on the web. causing us unable to decide which one to use.this create a big problem for us, therefore the amount of time for us to finish the project work needs to be lengthened.while books in the librart, though hard to find, are actually quite resourceful.i do not have to worry about deciding which information i should use.
i have learn that time management is very important.we must learn to manage our time well, so that we can complete our assignments on time.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I understand is..
ReplyDeleteDue to the limited time, we had to rush through in finding books and information which is rather tough for me since I'm usually a slow reader.

ReplyDeleteFrom the research, I found out that the government in Singapore have done a great job in developing a more advanced technology and make it accessible and useful for people around the nation, including the needy and the elderly.

ReplyDeleteAs a freshman, I was unsure about the library in school but this lesson helped me learn more about it.
As the group that went to the library, I find that it consume more time finding information in the library. But it is the most concrete information as it is from reliable sources.

ReplyDeleteI was late for the lesson on Friday lesson , so i did not go to the library .
